Carl Waluconis, who taught English and Coordinated Studies in the division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Seattle Central College until 2017, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020. The family planned to have the memorial when it was safe to do so publicly. Fellow faculty members, however, are planning on their own digital remembrance for Waluconis. There is set to be a Zoom Memorial on Friday, April 24, from 3 PM to 4 PM that’s open to all members of the Seattle Central community.
Waluconis was a long-time faculty member at Seattle Central with a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike. He was known for pioneering “Our Ways of Knowing,” one of the early humanities courses that focused on learning styles and pedagogies. He worked at dozens of local campuses, including as exchange faculty at the Tacoma campus of The Evergreen State College. As a professional writer, he mentored student literary writers. “Carl helped me navigate the challenges of being a new hire twenty-something years ago when there were barely any of our current institutional mechanisms in place,” says English teacher Greg Bachar. A poet as well, Waluconis was also proud to have brought Charles Bukowski to Bellevue Community College for a reading during Waluconis’ time there. He later appeared as a character in one of Bukowski’s short stories.
If you would like to join the Zoom memorial, here is the link to the meeting room, which will open at 3 PM on Friday. Anyone is welcome to join to pay their respects.
