The movie Avengers: Endgame is the best culmination there could be for the 22 movies and 2871 minutes of Marvel-ous entertainment that make up Marvel’s phases 1-3.
Starting when Iron Man graced the silver screen back in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has traveled the galaxy and greatly increased its cast of superheroes. To complete this series, Marvels Studios made the blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame as one movie with a year long intermission (with audiences left reeling during time between the two thanks to Infinity War’s “snap” cliffhanger).
Infinity War saw our heroes come face-to-face with their most powerful enemy yet, Thanos. Played by Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Deadpool 2), who does an excellent job, Thanos is one of the strongest villains in the MCU. For those who have somehow managed to avoid spoilers for the past year: Thanos went up against the Avengers and their allies to take back the six infinity stones and become the most powerful being in the universe. Once he retrieved all the stones he used them to kill 50 percent of the known universe with the “snap” (including some of our most beloved characters) because he believed it was overpopulated. Black Panther, Spider-Man, Star Lord, Dr Strange, Nick Fury, and more all vanished into dust.
Endgame begins a few weeks after the ending of Infinity War with the remaining superheroes trying to cope with the loss of half their world and working to figure out if there is a chance to make things right again. It was once again directed by the Russo Brothers (who have long been staples of the MCU, having directed Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and with their brilliant management the story flows beautifully. The performances in Endgame are way above average; the directors, producers, actors, and Marvel itself clearly took the material very seriously compared to earlier films.
The visuals effects are truly spectacular: unlike some films, I can see that every penny of the more than $350 million dollar budget was put to good use. Because of the CGI, which is truly a wonder to behold, and the intricacies of the acting, I recommend seeing it on the biggest movie screen you can find. The filmmakers has definitely outdone themselves with Endgame: it didn’t disappoint at all. I think that the hype around it is totally real — there’s a reason that Endgame has earned (at the publication of this review) $2.26 billion dollars at the box office, with more on the way.
The biggest question after endgame was: where does Marvel go from here? I can see some Avengers, such as Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Spider Man, continuing their own adventures in the future of the MCU. A new generation of superheroes is upon us.
Endgame is the end of an era in another way too: the late Stan Lee makes his last cameo appearance in it. I think that, if he were here, he would be proud of the passion and dedication put into this pop culture phenomenon.
